Flashback: SOTD 19, 20 & 20 1/2

I know, I know. You are thinking 20 1/2? It will be explained.

Song 19 is from Vampire Weekend. You most likely have heard some of their songs. If not, you are in for a treat. The song I chose is "A-Punk", the song that introduced me to the band. Enjoy!

Johanna drove slowly into the city
The Hudson River all filled with snow
She spied the ring on His Honor's finger
Oh-oh-oh

A thousand years in one piece of silver
She took it from his lilywhite hand
Showed no fear – she'd seen the thing
In the Young Men's Wing at Sloan-Kettering

Look outside at the raincoats coming, say OH

His Honor drove southward seeking exotica
Down to the Pueblo huts of New Mexico
Cut his teeth on turquoise harmonicas
Oh-oh-oh

I saw Johanna down in the subway
She took an apartment in Washington Heights
Half of the ring lies here with me
But the other half's at the bottom of the sea

Song 20 is by Idiot Pilot and the songs is "Retina and the Sky". Do you recognize the show they are parodying? 20 1/2 is also by Idiot Pilot and it's called "Planted in the Dark."

Flashback: SOTD 17 & 18

Sorry I havent posted lately. I have been really busy. And to top it off, first my filling fell out, now my tooth is chipping away. Is it really that hard to find a good dentist around my little town that isnt legally allowed to have female patients due to a lawsuit? Haha, I kid. To make up for it, I will post one more Flashback after this one.

Song 17 is from the band Tokyo Police Club. This is a band I listen to so much that I get sick of it, but a few months later, I will listen to it and fall in love all over again. The song I chose is "Tessellate". Enjoy!

All the boys who called their mothers on that day
Were no tough bunch but they had the nerves to go and say
That all your secrets were drowned
With the pioneers who were flooded from this town
They packed their bags only moments too late
With the pounding waves crashing up against the weakened water gates

Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight

And all the kids who cut their knees on that old schoolyard fence
Were holding out for posterity and self-defense
We beat them down again
There's no fun in playing cowboys for pretend
We showed them what the backs of our hands is for
The divide is clear in the coming year
The rich will take the poor

Because dire times call for dire faces
So lovely dancer, call and answer
Trade our places in the night
We're running barefoot, you and I
Dead lovers salivate
Broken hearts tessellate tonight

The 18th song comes from the band Headlights. I actually dislike about 90% of bands with female lead singers. Sometimes I will ignore it if the band is really good. But this is one where the lead singers voice makes her one my my favorite female singers. The harmonies go great with this band. Enjoy! (The lyrics I found were butchered, so I tried my hardest to fix them. Please comment if the lyrics are wrong.)

You could wake up
on a morning and try
to feel so good
that you didn't know why
and the things they're like
stop me from crying
in my bed at night
they stop me from crying

I couldn't take up
more space in my mind
there's a back door isn't easy to find
as a call from self-indulgence
we don't need a war
to prove that we're selfish

so can you tell me
that you feel the same
when you stare at the faces
full of so much shame

or is it you're too high
to tell us the part
so you can live your life
and keep up your lying

I cant even stand to watch the TV
liars and the killers keep staring at me
and the boys and the girls
you can tell their free
they grow up to destroy
everything that they see

Flashback: SOTD 15 & 16

Weezer has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I do prefer their older stuff, but I like to new stuff as well. Hell, the very first CDs I owned were Blink 182 and Weezer. The video I chose is for "Pork and Beans." A good balance of song and video. Enjoy!

They say I need some Rogaine
To put in my hair
Work it out at the gym
To fit my underwear
Oakley makes the shades
That transform a tool
You'd hate for the kids to think
That you lost your cool

I'mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm fine and dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

Everyone likes to dance
To a happy song
(Hey, hey)
With a catchy chorus and beat
So they can sing along
(Hey, hey)
Timbaland knows the way
To reach the top of the charts
Maybe if I work with him
I can perfect the art

I'mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm fine and dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think
No I don't care
I don't care

Who doesnt like The Decemberists? I love the flavor they bring to the genre. This song is a great sample of some of their best so far. Its called "16 Military Wives". Here is another video with guest appearances by Chris Walla from Death Cab For Cutie and John Roderick of The Long Winters. Enjoy!

Sixteen military wives
Thirty-two softly focused brightly colored eyes
Staring at the natural tan
of thirty-two gently clenching wrinkled little hands
Seventeen company men
Out of which only twelve will make it back again
Sergeant sends a letter to five
Military wives, whose tears drip down through ten little eyes

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America dies, if America says it's so
It's so!

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da

Fifteen celebrity minds
Leading their fifteen sordid wretched checkered lives
Will they find the solution in time
Using their fifteen pristine moderate liberal minds?

Eighteen academy chairs
Out of which only seven really even care
Doling out the garland to five
Celebrity minds, they're humbly taken by surprise

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America dies, if America says it's so
It's so!

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-da
La de da de da de-dadedade-da

Fourteen cannibal kings
Wondering blithely what the dinner bell will bring
Fifteen celebrity minds
Served on a leafy bed OF sixteen military wives

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America dies, if America says it's so
It's so!

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-da
La de da de da de-dadedade-da
La de da de da de-dadedade-da-dedadeda-de de dadede-daaaaa

Flashback: SOTD 13 & 14

So, the 13th song I liked because of the oddity of the music video. The song is damn good too. The band is called Omaha Bitch, and I believe they are from France. Haha. Slightly different sound than my day to day music, but I have you enjoy anywho.

Dance floor
T’es sur le Dance Floor
So dior
Tu remues ton corps
Christal
Only the best champagne !
Spotlights !
T’es tellement show-off, t’es so rock, tu prendrais bien des cours de guitare.
Hahaha
Gnagnagna
White stripes !
T’écoutes les white stripes
Star Ac’
Sex drugs and endemol, ton look glam, t’as un T-shirt d’Iron Maiden
Maideeen Gnagna...
Cause now you love to rock
Oh yeah ma salope
You are my little dancing dancing cyprine
Ass on fire
Ass on fire
I will set up ass on fire
Go see the strokes
Fucking trendy bitch

The 14th song is from a band I have loved for a long time, called Beirut. I think Zach Condon has so much talent and a voice I melt over. The video I chose was for the song "Elephant Gun". It shows off all the sounds and wonders I enjoy.

If I was young, I'd flee this town
I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight

Far from home, elephant gun
Let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin - take the big game down

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin - take the big game down

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the night

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the silence, all that is left is all that I hide

Flashback: SOTD 11 & 12

The 11th song is from the band The Matches and the song is called "Wake the Sun".

Every dawn gets its day like
Every frown gets her way like
Every step to the daylight keeps you stumbling on
Every backward blackbird
Standing out through the rafters
So sure he can meet her
Thinks he bears a tone
So wake up, wake up, wake the sun

Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wait for, wait for the first train

Man dragging a sheep skin
Preaching reeking of weekend
To the siren speaking tongues of kingdom come
Every dawn gets its day like
Every gal gets her way like
Every step that I lay down brings me where I'm from
To lay down, lay down, to lay my cross

Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wait for, wait for the first train

Oh oh, ohhh
Oh oh, ohhh that train

Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wait for, wait for the first train

Who hired the walls of the station
To arrest my imagination
Profit from my place under the callous thumb
Every dawn gets its day like
Man, they blindly parade like
Every step that we weigh down plays out like a drum
To wake up, shake up, to wake the sun

Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wake up, wake up, wake the sun
Wake up, wake up, hanging like a chain
Wait for, wait for the first train

The 12th song is by Carpark North. Another band where none of the video or songs can go wrong. The video I chose was the one that introduced me to them, so now, I show it to you. Enjoy!

CARPARK NORTH - HUMAN from martin de thurah on Vimeo.

You're so right and you don't think you're wrong
You're not on the list and you're not in my songs
I did right to walk and just leave you there
'cause no one can stand your fear of fear
so wrong and you still think your right
and I was too old to pick that fight
and nothing you touched is changed today
I broke up with you 'cause you didn't change - me
yeah!
yes it's human
it's just human
you noticed?
yeah!
you're just human
did you notice?
damn right!
You're so right and you don't think you're wrong
You're not on the list and you're not in my songs
I did right to walk and just leave you there
'cause no one can stand your fear of fear
yeah!
yes it's human
it's just human
you noticed?
yeah!
you're just human
did you notice?
damn right!

Flashback: SOTD 9 & 10

Song 9 is from a band I hold dear to my heart. They are called The Weakerthans. I was refreshed when I heard their music all those years ago because they bring a while new flavor to music. The video I chose was for the song "The Reasons" but Epitaph has disabled embedding. The replacement video is for "Our Retired Explorer". I do highly recommend checking them out if you like this song. If you want to skip the cinematic part of the vide, the music starts 1:05. Enjoy!

Just one more drink and then I should be on my way home.
I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about.
I've had a really nice time, but my dogs need to be fed.
I must say that in the right light, you look like Shackelton.

Comment allez-vous ce soir?
Je suis comme ci comme ca.
Yes, a penguin taught me French back in Antartica.

Oh, I could show you the way shadows colonize snow.
Ice breaking up on the bay off the Lassiter coast.
Light falling over the pole as every longitude leads
up to your frost bitten feet. Oh, you're very sweet.

Thank you for the flowers and the book by Derrida,
but I must be getting back to dear Antarctica.

Say, do you have a ship and a dozen able men that maybe you could lend me?

Oh, Antarctica.

The 10th song is by Mates of State who already had "Fraud in the 80's" on the list. I put the song "Get Better" up not only because it is a great song and video, but it helped that it was their new single at the time. Enjoy every second of it!

Forget all your politics for a while.
Let the color schemes arrive.

Come onboard, it's a curious sight.
Absorbing sound that's never been right.
Never ahead of, never behind it.
Occasionally guarded, just keeps us surrounded.
It's luck.

Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better.
Ahhh.

I propose a less serious boat.
But don't mistake it for a party of jokes,
Who are never ahead of, never behind us.
Floating in circles there's more to remind them of less.

Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better.
Ahhh.

Forget all your politics for a while.
Let the color schemes arrive.
Done. I'm done. I'm done.

Flashback: SOTD 7 & 8

Song 7 comes to us from the band The Long Winters. I have loved this band for so long and I personally think John Roderick is a musical genius. They dont have many music videos, but this son, "Fire Island AK" is a great song. Enjoy the wonder of The Long Winters.

Here's how I found out
a man called my house
he asked me what I knew
they found my letter

And I don't have to wonder
no I don't have to wonder
so I don't have to wonder
did it reach you? Did it reach you?

Good morning Fire Island
I'm not sure who to ask
they said wait until tomorrow
they found my letter

And I don't have to wonder
so I don't have to wonder
no I don't have to wonder
did it reach you? Did it reach you?

Cinders in the garden
from the cars parked on the lawn
they're tracking up the carpet
they found my letter

and I don't have to wonder
no I don't have to wonder
so I don't have to wonder
did it reach you? Did it reach you?

You've got to start the car the ice has come

The 8th song is from a band called The Polysics from Japan. I would love to see these guys in concert. Its seems like it would be so much fun. I know that it was really hard to pick just one video from them because all of their videos are so good and I dont doubt that they will show up on this list in the future. This song is called "Electric Surfin' Go Go". Enjoy!

(Here are the lyrics if you want. I hope they are right, haha.)
Flash flash shiteru
Sou gutto arukou
Crash crash yume ni
Miyouka

Smash smash uteru
Kyou kitto asu mo
Dash dash kimeni
Ikouka

Mizu kara sameta atarashii kyoudai
Souzou suruto tanoshigena wave

Electric surfin' go go
Electric surfin' go go
Konna hi wa asa kara yamerarezu
Tsukihi kasanetemo yure ugoku
Let's go
Electric surfin' go go

Flashback: SOTD 5 & 6

Song of the day 5 is from the band Matt and Kim who have gained a bit of attention lately with their most recent album. This video is one of their first songs. There really isnt much to say, just enjoy the video!

Forget your court date
Lock me away, the world waits
Cuffs cut deep to the bones
We're trying to sleep, we're trying to sleep
I have these hands, woahh-ohh-ohh
Can turn back time
Time can be a game and we're losing this one,
But still i'm sane

Yea yeah
Yea yeah
Yea yeah

You stole tapes and a flashlight
On a summer night from my car
I found something in a lightening storm
With heavy rain and thunder like mountains torn, yeah
When everything seems to wash away
I walked here with just two feet on the ground
Ground, ground, ground, ground, ground!

Yea yeah
Yea yeah
Yea yeah

Lock me up, officer
One mistake i made
Yea yeah, take me away
I say this to myself
Close the door on myself
Yea yeah, take me away
I found something in a lightening storm
With heavy rain and thunder like melted storm, yeah
When everything seems to wash away
I walk here with just two feet on the ground
Ground, no, no, no, no!

Yea yeah
Yea yeah
Yea yeah

The 6th song is from a band called Rogue Wave. I dont listen to this song for long periods of time, but when I hear it again, I cant stop playing it. Its such a beautiful song. Enjoy!

Heaven is a switchboard that you want to fight
she would even miss you if you taught her sight
power politician leaning to the right
baby's got a trust fund
that she'll want to go off like that
get off of my stack
leave a little window
get off of my stack

Now we wear same-colored yellow uniforms
sky is burning
but at least we're warm
go and run yourself a million miles
hoping that the colors run out
and you go off like that
get off of my stack
leave a little window
get off of my stack

You can never see yourself
ringing all around it

No one is on lake michigan
you labored on, lake michigan

Not another payoff
get off of my stack
leave a little window
get off of my stack
you know it won't do
get off of my stack

Flashback: SOTD 3 & 4

We are finally moving away from Modest Mouse. Sad, I know. But there are great artists to come!

Song 3 is by the band, Mates of States, and the song is called "Fraud of the 80s". I love Mates of States for their simple drum and keyboard mix and how they make it sound so complex. So many wonderul layers in all of their songs. They later become the 10th song artists, but you will have to wait for that. Meanwhile, enjoy!

Don't put your hand in the pockets that feed you
You might not get it out
Remember the weight of the yellowish night
No cat is for this dull world

I spent a long time trying to see through
People trying to call me out
Remember the weight of the glorious night
That's just so we drink it in

See the glow up above
See it glow telling us to reign the streets of London
Like the lords of other towns
The glistening of make-up helps to construct a better clown

And you will surely find this news pleasing to your ears

See the glow up above
See it glow telling us it rained the streets of London
Like it pours on other towns
But the glistening of make-up helps to construct a better clown

And you will surely find this news pleasing to your ears

You can surely try to be more alive

The 4th song is by a man that goes by the name Gotye. This was the first song I put on where I was just as much in love with the video as the song. They are both so whimsical and bizarre that you wont be able to forget them that easily. Please enjoy!

Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

You have lost
(Too much love)
To fear, doubt and distrust
(It's not enough)
You just threw away the key
To your heart

You don't get burned
('Cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier
(Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see.

Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this

Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you cant live like this

Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love

Flashback: SOTD 1 & 2

I noticed that I didnt have the first 26 SOTD's posted because I started all this on myspace (yes, that old) and just put a lit when I started this blog. I realize that the point of this blog if for you, the people, to see and listen to these songs I put up. So, everyday, I will post the first 26 songs in groups of 2, along with the regular postings. To help keep the confusion down, I will post all the old ones with "Flashback". Ok? Ok.

Here are the first 2 song of the days by my favorite band ever, Modest Mouse. I just randomly posted the first one "Dashboard" because it was new at the time and I wanted to share it with everyone. A few days later, I was driving my friend, James, somewhere and he said that he liked the song and that I should post more. So, its all because of him this got started. Thanks, James. I hope you are still a follower. Haha. The second song is "Float On" which is my favorite song of all time. Its all I listened to for years. My sister got annoyed of it being on every mix CD I made. Without further ado, Modest Mouse's "Dashboard" and "Float On". Enjoy!

Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio.

Oh, it should've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go.

Oh, it could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know.
Well, the windshield was broken but I love the fresh air you know.
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)

Oh, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know, oh!
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)
Oh, we talked about nothing which was more than I wanted you to know-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Now here we go!

Oh! It would've been, could've been worse than it had even gone
Well, the car was on blocks, but I was already where I want.
(It was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)

Why should we ever even ever really even get to know?
(It was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)
Oh if the world don't like us it'll shake us just like we were a co-oh-oh-oh-old.
Now here we go!

Well we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon,
Every dawn you're surprising,
and in the evening one's consoling
Saying "See it wasn't quite as bad as"
Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.

I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes
After you had proved my point wrong,
It wasn't like I'd let it go, oh-oh-oh. Oh-oh-oh.
I just wanted to catch the last laugh of this show.

Yeah, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio.
(The dashboard melted, but we ran it good, we ran it good)

Hard-wired to conceive, so much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs, tiny giants made of tinier giants.
Don't wear eyelids so I don't miss the last laugh of this show.
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)

Oh, we could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know.
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)
Well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go-oh-oh-oh-oh.

Oh it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.

I backed my car into a cop car the other day.
Well he just drove off, sometimes life's OK.
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, oh what did I say?
Well you just laughed it off, it was all OK.

And we'll all float on OK. And we'll all float on OK.
And we'll all float on OK. And we'll all float on anyway.

Well, a fake Jamaican took every last dime with that scam.
It was worth it just to learn some sleight of hand.
Bad news comes, don't you worry even when it lands.
Good news will work its way to all them plans.
We both got fired on exactly the same day.
Well we'll float on, good news is on the way.

And we'll all float on OK. And we'll all float on OK.
And we'll all float on OK. And we'll all float on.
Alright already, we'll all float on.
No don't you worry. We'll all float on.
Alright, already. We'll all float on.
Alright, don't worry. We'll all float on.

And we'll all float on.
Alright already, we'll all float on.
Alright, don't worry even if things end up a bit too heavy.
We'll all float on.

Alright already, we'll all float on.
Alright already, we'll all float on OK.
Don't worry, we'll all float on.
Even if things get heavy, we'll all float on.
Alright already, we'll all float on alright.
Don't you worry, we'll all float on.
We'll all float on.
